HighTide Festival

HighTide Festival are giving you talented bunch of scribblers the chance to have your play produced at their brilliant theatre festival in Suffolk in May, 2013.

If you’re a writer and would like to send your script to HighTide, then the Literary Department is your first port of call. They are particularly looking for bold plays that engage with the world we live in, and share contemporary experience through playful theatricality. This brief is the only way to submit a play for production at the HighTide Festival, and we will happily accept scripts in English from writers around the world.

To apply sign up for IdeasTap:

Entries will be judged by Rob Drummer, Literary Manager of HighTide and a team of experienced script readers.

Before you submit a play, look at the writers HighTide have worked within the past and the projects they have developed as well as joining us at the Festival May 3-13 where we will produce 18 premieres.

Please do not send screenplays, treatments, radio plays, prose or poetry as HighTide do not produce work in adaptation or for non-live performance. HighTide also rarely produce historical drama or biographical work unless these allow us a new perspective on contemporary life.

This brief closes on Wednesday 2 May 2012 at 5pm and is open to IdeasTap members aged 16 or over. The brief will reopen on Thursday 3 May.

If you have any technical queries, email Late entries will not be accepted under any circumstances, including technical issues.

Nick Darke Award

The School of Media & Performance at University College Falmouth is pleased to announce the opening of this year’s Nick Darke Award. The award will continue to celebrate the best writing for stage, screen and radio with writers having the chance of winning £6000.

This year’s judges include; Jeremy Howe, Drama Commissioning Editor for Radio 4; Molly Dineen, a BAFTA and Royal Television Society award-winning UK television documentary director, cinematographer and producer; Roger Michell, the theatre, television and film director who directed Notting Hill and Sebastian Born, the Associate Director (Literary) of the National Theatre London.

In the first instance submissions are invited for an outline and 20 sample script pages of work that will be considered by a selection of readers. The eight shortlisted writers will then be judged by a panel before the winner is announced in October 2012.

Writers are asked to submit work on an environmental theme in recognition of Nick’s lifelong commitment to this issue. The word environmental may however be broadly interpreted.

Emmerdale Writers Initiative

To celebrate its 40th Anniversary this year Emmerdale is searching for talented writers from the local area for a new initiative. Writers from a Black, Asian or other Minority Ethnic background are under-represented in the industry and so they want to support and develop original voices that might not always be heard. Their emphasis is on characterled rather than culture-specific but they are looking for writers who will bring their experiences and nuances to the show.

The initiative is open to BAME writers who have a permanent residence within the Yorkshire and North East Region. Professional experience is not essential but they are looking for people who can demonstrate a commitment to writing and passion for telling stories.

Applicants will be asked to submit an original script, between 30-90 minutes in a standard format, by the end of May.
