Late Dec./Early Jan

Do you have a piece of promising new writing (not necessarily in its final draft), an idea or are part of a groups with a devised piece? We are looking for work to be produced, developed and rehearsed in London. This work will then be shown at a London fringe venue, with the view to sent it to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and to enter it for the National Student Drama Festival.
We are looking for inspiring pieces, of any genre, that are shorter than an hour in length (with no minimum length).
The performers are likely to be between the ages of 18-25 but your characters can be of any age.

Red Planet Prize

The Red Planet Prize for scriptwriters is now open to entries.  The prize awards the winner a £5,000 cash prize and entry to a mentoring scheme – which currently hosts more than 40 new writers found through the initiative. Red Planet also hope to option the winning script, but this will be discussed with and decided by the winner.

Behind The bikeshed Theatre are looking for scripts inspired by specific pieces of art! It’s for their show in Feb 2012, about robots, machines, and all things mechanical… art work (the inspiration) is on our flickr account, and more will go up as the weeks go on.

Benchmarks 2012

Hull Truck theatre and theatre company, Park Bench, are looking for new voices from all over Yorkshire to submit work that will be curated, developed and performed as part of the BENCHMARKS series at Hull Truck. BENCHMARKS is a regular series of work-in-progress evenings showcasing and developing emerging talent from the region.

Responding to the world today; disjointed community, change in a community and creating a new community. They are looking for writers to go beyond the page, respond and be inspired and empowered by their own community and to interpret that in whatever way they choose.

The piece you submit can be unfinished at this stage. They are looking for potential in new voices, whether it is a play between 20-90 pages, a draft, a completed script or an unfinished story.

Script Space 2012

Back for a fifth year running, Tobacco Factory Theatre’s Script Space is an open competition that invites submissions of new, unperformed one-act plays from UK-based writers for tailor-made development opportunities.

Email submissions are preferred. Please send a single Word or PDF attachment (no CVs or synopses, please) to, putting the play title in the subject box and including your full name, address and contact details in the email. Entries will be judged anonymously so please don’t include your name on the script itself.

Theatre Trail Writers Competition 2012

The Arundel Festival Theatre Trail, conceived and presented by Drip Action Theatre Company, is now in its twelfth year. It performs at the end of August, on each of the Festival’s eight days, eight short plays at eight different venues all over Arundel – last year, for example, in a living room, a kitchen, an art gallery and a pub.  Writers are invited to submit plays for next year’s Trail.

Plays should be between 30 and 40 minutes long, suitable for day-time performance, with practicable casting and props. All entries should be submitted to:

Sitcommission 2012

With an emphasis firmly on script development, The Sitcom Mission is an international sitcom writing competition, ‘the X-Factor for sitcoms’. It showcases 15-minute sitcom scripts at The New Diorama Theatre in London in front of the comedy commissioners from British TV and radio.

Drama Association of Wales One-Act Play Competition

The DRAMA ASSOCIATION OF WALES’ One Act Playwriting Competition 2012 has now been launched.  The competition aims to encourage the writing of plays for theatre in English and Welsh. In addition to cash awards, prize-winning plays will be published. Previous prizewinners have been published and performed as a result of promotion through our New Writing Scheme.

New Venture Theatre / Sussex Playwrights Club 10-Minute Play Competition – 2012

 All plays submitted must be a maximum of 10 minutes in length. They should also not be shorter than 5 minutes.
Plays must be written for the stage and may have no more than 3 characters in total.
Each submission must be accompanied by a payment of £5 entry fee for the competition.
