5th April

Call out for short scripts inspired by the Bread & Roses Centennial.

The Bread and Roses Centennial 1912-2012, is being marked by studioSTRIKE. We want scripts which respond to the themes of the Centennial;workers rights, particularly women workers rights, strikes, protest, immigration and capitalism.

We are looking for bold, engaging and intelligent writing. Stories can be told from any perspective – whether in support of, opposed to, or anywhere in between – with any period, setting or genre as long as they are a reaction to the above themes and are up to 10 minutes in length. Don’t give us obvious tales that have already been told – we want fresh characters, perspectives and ideas. Open to any writer, of any level of experience, who feels passionate about the stories they want to tell.

Writers must submit a script, in any medium, with a maximum length of 10 minutes to BBC writersroom by 5pm, April 5th 2012.

Stratford-Upon-Avon Fringe short play competition

Entries are now invited for the Stratford-Upon-Avon Fringe short play competition.  The challenge: 5 characters – 15 minutes – props you can fit in a bag.

Each play must address the title, which in this, the first year of the competition is “The Stranger.”
The Fringe is working in collaboration with the UK Refugee Council and many elements of the Fringe will include references to the theme of belonging, home and exile – hence the theme for this year’s competition.

Entries will be judged by a panel of writers and directors, and four will be selected for a rehearsed read through on 6th June at The Attic Theatre. The winner will be announced later that day and will be rehearsed and performed in The Dell theatre space later in the summer.

Call for scripts – SHERMAN CYMRU

We are accepting ten minutes plays or excerpts for Script Slam on May 31st 2012.
Five plays will be chosen, developed and performed script-in-hand by professional actors.After each play is performed a panel of industry experts – writers, actors and directors – will be on hand to offer their advice. The audience will then get to vote for their favourite. The winning writer will then have the opportunity to work with Sherman Cymru’s Literary Team to develop their playwriting skills.

Young Writers Festival 100 word plays

The Royal Court Theatre are inviting writers of all ages and experiences to have their short plays displayed throughout the Royal Court building during this year’s Young Writers Festival 2012. Your play can be about anything that interests you. Just one rule; it must be 100 words or fewer (including stage directions). 
How to submit

The 100 word plays on display will be frequently updated during the Festival, sitting alongside new shorts by Royal Court writers past and present. Plays can be submitted to the Royal Court anytime between February 23rd and April 10th 2012. You can submit your play in a number of different ways:

Post your 100 word play to: Studio- 100 Words, Royal Court Theatre, Sloane Square, London, SW1W 8AS
Hard copies of plays can be deposited in the ‘100 Word drop boxes’ located in the Café Bar and Box Office at the Royal Court Theatre. (from February 23rd)

An Opportunity for Established or Aspiring Playwrights at Theatre Royal Bath

The Theatre Royal Bath’s award winning Engage Programme offers a wonderful opportunity for local playwrights (within 30 miles of the theatre) to have their work produced at The Egg Theatre as part of its inaugural One Act Play Festival in September 2012.

Nine new one-act plays will be staged over three days in a festival that will involve both professional and non-professional performers and directors.

The plays which must not have been produced or performed previously must be written for no more than four actors and should not exceed 20 minutes in length.

Bits of Obits

Bits of Obits is a night of new writing, inspired by the first line of obituaries and performed at a wake at the Hanbury Arms in Islington.

We are inviting submissions from writers and performers of short plays inspired by a line of an obituary. You might find some inspiration here or feel free to choose your own. Pieces can be up to 15 minutes long and should be simply staged, with minimal use of props, costume and set.

The selected pieces will form part of an immersive theatre experience, performed at a ‘wake’ at the Hanbury Arms in Hoxton at the end of May.

Little pieces of Gold  – Southwark Playhouse

Little Pieces of Gold is a regular showcase for bold, thought provoking, entertaining new drama with each show featuring an eclectic mix of short plays selected from around 300 submissions.

For our June 3rd show there is no specific theme so the world’s you’re oyster! If your play is selected it is then assigned a director who will cast, rehearse and direct your piece to performance standard. We would be hugely grateful if you could stick to the following guidelines. Thank you.

1. Your play must be no longer than 15 mins duration.

2. We cannot accept extracts, adaptations or monologues.

3. We can only accommodate very basic sound/lighting.  No sets or ‘effects’. Our time will be extremely limited in regard to technical rehearsals so writers, please really adhere to this.

4. Your piece must not have been staged in the UK ( if it’s had a reading that’s fine).

5.  U.K. writers only.

6. Attach your work in a PDF or Word document.

7. Please include a very short synopsis of the play and a brief writer’s bio.

8. Cast should be limited to 4 actors.

Brit Writers’ Awards

Submit your story, poem or song to the Brit Writers’ Awards and be in with a chance of winning £10,000!

Please read below details about the writing categories you can enter your work within:
These awards are open to all unpublished and self-published writers from the UK and across the world.

These categories are open to Key Stage 1 (5-7 years), Key Stage 2 (7-11 years) and Key Stages 3 and 4 (11-16 years) age groups.

Organised Chaos productions – Script Call

Organised Chaos are very pleased to reveal that the two shows selected from this year’s Script Call will debut with a short run at The Lowry in the spring of 2013 with further dates throughout the North West to be confirmed.
The Script Call is for original, production ready, work that has not previously been produced. Pieces need to be suitable for a studio space, have a cast of between 1 and 6 with a running time of no longer than 60 minutes. If your play is selected Organised Chaos will produce the debut of your play, plan and produce future performances and help get relevant industry people to watch your play.

The 42nd Theatre Company are looking for theatre scripts from writers of any age and experience. 

The 42nd Theatre Company is a newly established professional theatre company committed to producing high quality new writing and reinvigorated versions of old classics. They are currently looking for submissions of work from writers of any age and experience.

Aiming to bridge the gap between cinema and theatre, they wish to produce work that is both accessible and relatable, provoking emotional and intellectual responses from their audiences and ensuring that their every performance lives long in the memory.

Plays of all lengths are welcomed and writers whose scripts are commissioned will be compensated.
