Are you Welsh, an Easterner or a woman?

Is Easterner a word? Anyway, this autumn HighTide Festival Theatre is embarking upon a Writers’ Group Roadshow and  are looking for writers based in the East of England to participate in a series of bespoke writers groups hosted at various venues. The sessions are free but you do need to book. If you go here you can find out where the roadshows are going to be.

HighTide is committed to artist development in the East of England and as part of Escalator Plays are offering mentoring and project support until April 2012. Escalator Plays is a new scheme that seeks to invest in writers and directors based in the East of England through bespoke relationships and project support.

For the Welsh, following the success of the Sherman’s Cardiff-based playwriting workshops, the programme is now going national! At venues across Wales, experienced stage writing tutors will host weekly workshops in both English and Welsh for emerging writers of all ages. Participants will learn about the key elements of playwriting, and with practical guidance from the tutors, as well as the Sherman Cymru team, will develop and complete a new play. The best of the bunch will be selected for a rehearsed reading event at each venue, when the chosen writers will have the opportunity to work with a professional cast and director.

For the women there is a group called 17 percent which is an organisation to support and promote female playwrights. (The name comes from a recent study that showed only 17% of UK produced plays are written by women.) The blog is a good one to follow, and they are starting a new showcase night for  UK-based female playwrights which will be held on a 2-monthly basis at the Horsebridge Arts and Community Centre in Whitstable.

They are looking for micro-plays written by female playwrights – complete plays of up to 6 minutes with a maximum of 4 actors required – on a rolling schedule. The plays will receive a rehearsed reading with some blocking, and will be filmed for the 17Percent Youtube channel. The first two evenings  to be held this year will be themed around a menu and they are looking for plays that fit into one of the categories of ‘Starter’, ‘Main’ or ‘Dessert’. I’ve missed the first deadline but the second one is November 11th for a reading on December 7th.

In other news I’ve just found out that the ghost story I sent to Core Theatre is going to be included in their ‘Devil’s Night’ story-telling evening. I am a little bit excited.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
